Meaning & usage

A dhoti is a single length of unstitched cloth (typically 4–6 yards) wrapped around the waist and legs in a variety of regional styles. It remains the formal traditional men's garment across much of India, particularly for religious occasions, classical performances and South Indian weddings. Tamil "veshti", Bengali "dhuti" and Maharashtrian "dhotar" are regional names for variants of the same garment.
