Kurta

कुर्ता
KOOR-tah

Loose, collarless tunic worn by men and women across South Asia.

Meaning & usage

A kurta is a long, loose, often collarless tunic that falls anywhere from the hips to the knees. Worn over pyjamas, churidars or jeans, it is unisex and class-spanning — the same garment, in different fabrics, may be office wear, festive wear, or sleepwear. The kurta-pyjama is the standard semi-formal men's outfit; a heavily embroidered kurta with a Nehru jacket is wedding wear.

In a sentence

He wore a white linen kurta over jeans to the launch.
