Dharma

धर्म
DHAR-mah

Moral and natural law — duty, righteousness, and the right way to live.

Meaning & usage

Dharma is one of the four aims of human life in Hindu thought (alongside artha, kama and moksha). It denotes the cosmic order, the duties appropriate to one's role in society, and the personal ethical path. In Buddhism the same Sanskrit word becomes "dhamma" in Pali and means the Buddha's teaching as much as the underlying law of reality. There is no single English equivalent.
