sul-VAR
Loose, pleated trousers worn across South Asia, usually as the bottom half of a salwar-kameez.
Meaning & usage
A salwar is a pair of loose-fitting trousers gathered at the waist with a drawstring and tapered at the ankle. The pleats are deep and the cut is generous, making it comfortable in hot weather. It is almost always worn as the lower half of a salwar-kameez ensemble (with a long tunic top called the kameez) and is the default everyday wear for a great many women across North India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
