SAH-ree

Draped Indian garment for women, a single length of cloth wrapped around the body.

Meaning & usage

A sari is an unstitched length of cloth — typically five to nine yards — draped around the waist and over the shoulder, worn with a fitted blouse (choli) and petticoat underneath. There are over a hundred regional draping styles. The fabric vocabulary is vast: Banarasi silk, Kanjeevaram, Chanderi, Bandhani, Sambalpuri, Patola, Tant. The sari is everyday wear for tens of millions of women and the standard for formal and wedding occasions.
