Meaning & usage

Yoga is one of the six classical schools of Hindu philosophy. The word means "union" or "yoke" — the joining of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali codify the eight-limbed practice: ethical restraints, observances, postures (asana), breath control, sense withdrawal, concentration, meditation and absorption. Modern global "yoga" focuses almost entirely on the asana limb, often divorced from the rest.
