Karma

कर्म
KAR-mah

Action and its moral consequence — a foundational concept in Indian religions.

Meaning & usage

In Sanskrit, karma simply means "action" or "deed". In Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sikh philosophy it is the principle that every action carries a moral charge that returns to the actor — across this life and, in many traditions, across subsequent rebirths. In everyday English use the word has narrowed into something closer to "cosmic payback", a colloquialism that captures only a fraction of the original.

In a sentence

He shrugged and said losing the wallet was just karma.
