Meaning & usage

A mantra is a sound, word, or phrase — usually in Sanskrit — chanted or recited to concentrate the mind, generate spiritual energy or invoke a deity. "Om" is the seed of all mantras; "Om namah Shivaya" or the Gayatri mantra are longer examples. In secular English the word has been borrowed to mean any repeated motivational phrase, which is a thin shadow of the original.

In a sentence

"Keep moving" became her mantra on the long trek.
