Bhakti
भक्ति
BHUCK-tee
Loving devotion to a personal god — a major strand of Hindu religious practice.
Meaning & usage
Bhakti is the path of devotion in Hinduism, contrasted with paths of knowledge (jnana) and action (karma). The Bhakti movement, which spread across India from roughly the 7th to the 17th centuries, produced an explosion of vernacular devotional poetry — Mirabai in Rajasthani, Kabir in Hindi, Tukaram in Marathi, Nammalvar in Tamil — that bypassed Sanskrit and the priesthood and put god into the language of the street.
In a sentence
Her grandmother sang Mirabai's bhakti poems every evening.
