ROH-tee
Round, unleavened Indian flatbread cooked on a hot griddle.
Meaning & usage
Roti is the everyday Indian flatbread — wheat flour and water, kneaded, rolled flat, cooked on a tawa (griddle) and finished briefly over a flame so it puffs. It is the staple of much of north and central India, used to scoop up curries and dals. Closely related breads include phulka, chapati and the layered paratha. "Roti" can also be a stand-in for "food" or "livelihood" in everyday speech.
In a sentence
Two fresh rotis came off the tawa, still puffing.
