Naan
नान
NAHN
Soft, leavened flatbread traditionally baked in a tandoor (clay oven).
Meaning & usage
Naan is a leavened flatbread, traditionally cooked by slapping the rolled dough onto the inner wall of a tandoor, where it puffs and chars in a minute. It's richer than roti — usually made with maida (refined flour), yoghurt and sometimes egg or milk. Variants include garlic naan, butter naan and stuffed kulcha. Most home cooks substitute a hot cast-iron tawa or a grill.
In a sentence
A plate of garlic naan arrived first, oily and blistered.
