Bindi

बिंदी
BIN-dee

Decorative mark or jewel worn on the forehead, traditionally by Hindu women.

Meaning & usage

A bindi is a coloured dot or decorative jewel worn on the forehead between the eyebrows. Traditionally red and worn by married Hindu women as a sign of marital status, the modern bindi is also a fashion accessory in many colours and shapes. Sticker bindis with adhesive backs now far outnumber the powder-and-paste original. The placement corresponds to the ajna chakra, the "third eye" of yogic tradition.

In a sentence

She matched a gold sticker bindi to her sari for the evening.
