Meaning & usage
Bhangra began as a Punjabi harvest dance performed at Baisakhi, the spring festival, and has since become both a wedding-floor staple across the diaspora and a globally remixed music genre. The traditional ensemble is built around the dhol — a large two-headed drum — with shoulder-shrugs, leaps and "hoy! hoy!" calls. The 1980s UK Punjabi scene fused bhangra with hip-hop and electronic music, sending it around the world.
