Bengaluru

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು
BENG-uh-loo-roo

Capital of Karnataka and India's technology capital; called Bangalore in English until 2014.

Meaning & usage

Bengaluru is the capital of Karnataka and the centre of India's software industry — home to Infosys, Wipro, ISRO and innumerable startups. The city was officially renamed from the anglicised "Bangalore" to "Bengaluru" in 2014, restoring the Kannada pronunciation. It sits on the Deccan Plateau at over 900 metres above sea level, which gives it a milder climate than the lowland Indian cities and the nickname "Garden City".
