Literal meaning "Earthen pot" commonly used by all Hindi speakers. Also used as "lottery" in Mumbai in mid 20th century, where folded paper notes with some integers written inside were put in the "Matka" (Earthen pot) and people guessed which "number" would be pulled out against a fee. Then, one paper-note was pulled out as a lottery. The lucky persons whose guesed number was pulled out, would get a fixed amount as the prize money.
