Maithili is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken in the Mithila region of India and parts of Nepal. It has a rich literary tradition and is recognized as one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. The language is known for its unique script, Tirhuta, although it is often written in Devanagari today.
