Meaning & usage
Eid is the common shorthand in India for the two principal Islamic festivals. Eid al-Fitr (also "Eid ul-Fitr") ends the month-long Ramadan fast and is marked by communal prayers, new clothes, sweet vermicelli (sevaiyaan) and visits to family. Eid al-Adha, sometimes "Bakra Eid" in India, falls about two months later and commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son. Both festivals begin with the sighting of the new moon.
